Open Question: Traveling abroad for a year?

Hey all- Ok so...I have this new idea in mind that instead of going to college, I want to take a year off college and travel abroad. First of all does anyone think this is a good idea or recommend it? Secondly, what are some of the best places you would recommend to do this? I was thinking like Ireland, France, Spain, Italy...not set but just bouncing off some ideas... If anyone has any advice for me, PLEASE let me know..I don't know if I want to do this yet, it seems like a really cool idea and I mean, hey why not?
